Two Decisions, Not One

An unfamiliar task does not automatically need an AI agent. An agent does not automatically need permission to act independently. These are separate engineering decisions, and confusing them makes both architecture and risk harder to reason about.

The useful distinction is between choosing a path and authorizing an action. Discovery may require flexible reasoning. Execution still needs explicit boundaries, adequate evidence and an observable result.

How Much Uncertainty Can an AI Agent Act On?

An AI agent can tolerate uncertainty when choosing another search query. The same uncertainty may be unacceptable when overwriting a trusted record or publishing a factual claim. A single autonomy setting cannot express that difference.

The design question is action-specific, but it has a hard boundary: can the system discover that its judgment is wrong in time to prevent unacceptable consequences? Without a meaningful way to challenge the judgment, accepting more uncertainty can become accepting undetectable failure.

The Same Task, Different Autonomy: Research, Draft, Publish

“Research and publish an article” sounds like one assignment. It contains several kinds of work: discovering sources, interpreting claims, drafting prose, validating files, approving a version and changing a public site. Each has a different relationship to uncertainty.

This UniMatrixZ target pattern combines them without giving every stage the same autonomy. It is an architectural proposal based on the site’s production principles, not a claim that this entire runtime is already implemented.
